Provision of information through educational talks is a useful means of HIV/AIDS sensitisation.  A key element in this program is the use of 'high risk' groups (including traditional healers, barbers, drivers, etc.) as a vital means of educating the public.  Most of these target groups incidentally have a huge clientele.  For example, in the area of this study, most people (54%) rely on traditional medicine for the first line treatment of illnesses and injuries (1).  Project Hope has built strong connections with traditional healers.  Education and training make it possible for the herbalists to adopt less risky practices, to counsel and educate their clients on HIV/AIDS, and to refer them to Project Hope and the hospital when HIV testing and/or support is indicated.  If properly monitored, the potential outreach of traditional healers is phenomenal.  If the more than 120 trained practitioners in the area each see an average of just three people a day, the number of education and counselling opportunities can exceed 131.000 encounters in a year.  A similar potential exists with barbers, hairdressers and taxi drivers.
